THOU SHALT NOT JUDGE?
By Thomas Hurd
Satan has done a masterful job of creating unbalance in the religion of our time. The most vehemently spoken convictions include don’t Judge, God never gave a man the right to judge. While this sounds all nice and honorable it is actually destructive to true godliness. It is true that to criticize and or condemn for the sake of condemning is not honorable and in fact is quite destructive to godliness but judging is necessary for spiritual growth.
Matt.7:1-5 Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam [is] in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.
The previous text has been used over the years to say, “You can’t judge” or a true Christian doesn’t judge, only evil people judge and declare themselves to be a Christian. While evil people may indeed judge, to say that is what this text says is not biblically correct. What this text says is, first cleans yourself then work to cleans your brother. What value is there in a person who is covered in mud to try to clean the mud off someone else? All they will do is get their own mud on the other person this is the premise here.
God’s word always gives balance to keep those who are inclined to wander and better perspective. In the following texts it is clear, we are not to judge people or appearances but we are to judge actions. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck the righteous judgment would declare it to be a duck; any other deduction would be unreasonable.
John 7:24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
1 Corinthians 5:11-13 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat. For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within? But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.
God has given ample outlines as to what is sin and has called His people to be wise in discerning evil for the sake of remaining righteous; this takes judgment to see and understand what is or is not evil. We do not need to know if a person is evil only if they delight to do evil. Who could witness a man raping a woman and say, I can’t judge, I’m a Christian? Or who could see the irrefutable evidence of a man who murdered his wife and children and say, I can’t judge, I’m a Christian?
Deuteronomy 17:6 At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is worthy of death be put to death; [but] at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death.
Without judgment we would all live in a terrible place with no standard of right and wrong. It is my prayer that those demanding that no one should judge ever get their way or we will be in one fine mess.
